Graphic or Visual Scribing/ Recording

The terms ‘graphic’ or ‘visual’ ‘recording’ or ‘scribing’ are often used interchangeably. For us, they all mean the same thing.

This is our ‘entry level’ and most straight forward of our services. We will attend your meeting or workshop, listen to the key points and themes and, in real time, translate these into representations which combine words with pictures. What we produce is a visual distillation of the presentation, including the key points, ideas and useful details. We may also include some of your audience’s feedback to the ideas, important questions or quotes.

The piece of work you are left with can then be sent to you digitally and/or photographed. Audience members can see their ideas emerge during the meeting as well as see the final shapes that they take at the end of the meeting.

We can work with traditional analogue materials or with digital technology. We are also able to work with you in the virtual world, if circumstances prohibit us from attending in person.

You and your collaborators are able to share this on social media immediately.

If we make your graphic recording using digital technology, we can simultaneously create a real-time screen recording of the work. This is not a polished animation, but an immediate, lively and often entertaining piece of live scribing for you to share with your group at a later date as well as on social media straight after the event.

Vision Mapping

Vision mapping is usually a service we can offer you after a graphic recording or facilitation of a meeting or series of meetings has taken place.

Often, once you’ve taken a group through a workshop or a series of meetings, you will have spent valuable time and energy co-creating a vision for your team or clients. You will want this vision to be further simplified and shaped into a memorable, easily accessible form. You will also wish this vision to accurately represent the participants and their ideas and give them a demonstrable keepsake of their involvement.

We will work with you in the process of creating a graphic representation of that vision. The process will require us to work together with one or more visual metaphors which appropriately represent the vision and which participants and your target audience can immediately identify with.

Graphic Facilitation

If you are planning a participatory meeting with workshops and small group work, our graphic facilitation service can become an integral part of your event.

In some ways, this process is similar to graphic recording, in that we will produce a visual distillation of any presentations, including the key points, ideas and useful details around ideas. We will also include some of your participant’s feedback to the ideas, important questions or quotes. What is different lies in the addItional preparation and interaction with you and your clients, audience or workshop attendees.

The work we produce will require more work with you before the event. We will work with you to create the shape of the conversation beforehand and we may design a template that you, the participants or the facilitator could use. We may also produce a visual map for you to use prior and/or during your event. We would also design a template around your agenda for our own use during the graphic recording of your meeting. During the meeting, we will work with you in the interpretation of the responses of your group.

Illustration

We can illustrate pretty much anything you throw at us. We also enjoy a challenge. Illustration is very much tailored to your needs, whether it be for your website, book or leaflet, we will listen carefully to your vision and bring it to life.

Animation

We are skilled at using a variety of animation techniques and will pull on these according to the job in hand. A specialised animation project will be different from the immediate screen recordings that we can provide as part of our graphic recording and facilitation service. These are longer projects which require planning and design treatment. Some projects require a ‘hand made’ approach, others require a slick and seamless style. Whether you require an explainer video, an illustration of a poem, a music animation or an animated short story, as we work with you to understand your message, the treatment of the animation will become clear. We will then work on a script, storyboard, animation and final edit to ensure that you get your vision across.

Visual Storytelling through Sequential Art

This work often originates from a graphic recording or facilitated workshop. You may have a project which would benefit from a storytelling treatment.

You may also want a piece of live drawing to accompany a series of presentation at a conference or other event.

We will take a subject or piece of research and create a piece of sequential art for you. It will contain all the salient pieces of information. The visual nature of the piece provides an extremely accessible mode of communIcation for all audiences. We could also provide you with a simple animated version of the piece, which can grab the attention of you audience.

Workshops & Coaching

According to Dr. Lynell Burmark, Ph.D. Associate at the Thornburg Center for Professional Development and writer of several books and papers on visual literacy,

“…unless our words, concepts, ideas are hooked onto an image, they will go in one ear, sail through the brain, and go out the other ear. Words are processed by our short-term memory where we can only retain about 7 bits of information (plus or minus 2). Images, on the other hand, go directly into long-term memory where they are indelibly etched.”

The latest neuroscience has made its way into  “neuro-marketing” studies, and they continue to demonstrate the power of images in persuading audiences; in fact, audiences are increasingly conditioned to respond to video and images. It looks like this is here to stay, particularly now that digital technology is more accessible both for makers and consumers.

As communicators, whatever sector or industry we work in, we therefore need to up skill ourselves. That doesn’t necessarily mean producing videos or animations, but we do need enough visual fluency and literacy to manage our students, staff or volunteers.

What ever level you are in terms of drawing skills, we will work with individuals or groups in the process of passing on our skills of visual thinking.
